Farali apple tikki is an ideal light meal option during navratri fasting. With slightly sweet and savory notes, this one wins your hearts with its simplicity and flavors!!!
Think Navratri fasting, think sabudana khichdi, kuttu puri, sabudana vada. Though super yummy, they all are loaded with carbs. I try to maintain a balance and eat something different each day. I truly enjoy this farali(fasting) tikkis which I am sharing today. A delectable combo of apple, mashed potatoes, singhara flour, and spices makes it a sure winner. What I like about them is that they have a bit of everything, sweet from the apple, a little spicy from the chilies, zesty from ginger and lemon, and herby from cilantro. Moreover, these are made using minimal ghee/oil.
Crispy from outside and soft from inside, they make a healthy and delicious snack or meal during fasting. I usually savor them with vrat ki chutney (recipe included) as a meal while hubs also can't resist sneaking a tikki or two :))) A perfect navratri fasting recipe to relish!
You can easily make them any time of the year too. Just use table salt instead of rock salt and rice flour or bread crumbs instead of water chestnut flour to bind. Top it with your favorite chutneys, some sev, roasted cumin, red chili powder, and cilantro, and enjoy with some masala chai!!!
Ingredients
Vrat ki chutney
- 1 small bunch of fresh cilantro/coriander
- 15-20 mint leaves
- ½" ginger
- 2 green chilies
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- ½ cup yogurt/curd
- 2 tablespoons grated coconut
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon sendha namak (rock salt)
Farali Tikki
- 1 medium apple, washed, peeled, and finely chopped
- 1 large potato, boiled, peeled, and mashed
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons singhara flour (water chestnut flour) or any farali flour
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 1 green chili, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon roasted ground cumin
- ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
- ½ teaspoon sendha namak (rock salt) or as per taste
- 2-3 tablespoons Ghee or oil, to shallow fry
Instructions
Vrat ki chutney
- Combine all chutney ingredients in a blender.
- Pulse to a smooth consistency.
- Serve and enjoy with farali tikki!!!
Farali Tikki
- Combine all the tikki ingredients, except ghee/oil, and lightly knead to form a soft dough. Note: Add some more flour if needed to bind.
- Divide the dough into 7-8 equal lemon sized balls. Flatten with your palms and shape into tikkis/patties.
- Refrigerate for 20 minutes.
- Heat ghee/oil for shallow frying at medium-low heat in a cast iron skillet/tawa.
- Gently place the tikkis on the skillet. Shallow fry until golden brown.
- Flip and similarly fry the other side as well.
- Transfer the tikkis to a paper towel-lined plate.
- Enjoy with vrat ki chutney and chai!!!
Recipe Notes
- Grease your hands with oil while shaping tikkis in case the dough feels too sticky and you are still having trouble. Also, you can roll the tikkis in singhara flour and shape. Dust off the excess flour.
- Always cook on medium-low heat.
- Make these tikkis ahead and refrigerate. When ready to use, simply cook them and serve.
- To keep it vegan, use oil instead of ghee.
